Blue on blue now that we are through... Nov. 22nd, 2007 @ 03:21 pm
So Sis & I have been experimenting with Tiramisu lately. Last batch turned out to be not... so fantastic. Ran out of vanilla half way through the creation, not to also mention the extra shot of Kahlua I added to the soaking coffee sauce. ^_^; Still, it's worth an experimentation. And at the very least, I need to broaden my cooking repertoire. When it comes to Chinese or Malay foods, I'm pretty good. Got a pretty good range available to me at the moment. Granted, I've been cooking since I was 16, so not much of a choice there eh?

But I do need to expand what I can do. Sis is better at pastas, pies and baked goods by far. So I believe it's about time that I expand what I do know already. And since I am naturally rather fond of desserts ( What better way to top off the banquet that most of my main meals become? ) we're going down the road of sweet treats! Diabetes, here I come! ... Well not so much that sort of lifelong restrictions hopefully. After all, if all the ads being touted on television are to be believed, my current pants/belt size is well under the danger zone. 34 inches = 70 cms or so, right? At least, I can't quite recall if waist size is equivalent to the size they put on men's pants. Probably not, that would require logic and since when does logic come into the fashion world?

Television has been bombarding me with an incredible amount of politically-biased advertisements lately so I'm considering just not watching at all until after Saturday. ( For you non-Aussies, the Australian Federal Election is this Saturday. Pity me. ) Curse you Federal Election! *shakes fist*

Five, six, nine, and ten. Money can't buy you back the love that you had then. Nov. 9th, 2007 @ 02:34 pm
So it's been quite some time since I last posted. Apologies to those who have come to rely upon my general musings to provide them with a modicum of entertainment, procrastination and a good excuse to wreck their diminishing eyesight.

In general, I was busy over the course of a few weeks just spending time with my Father whilst he was over here in Melbourne. I only see him once every few months or so, and it's a good cause to really sit down & spend time with him. That said, to go from a fairly independent lifestyle (despite living with one's sister) to one spending 24 hours of the day with a respected member of your close-knit family, it's something of a major life adjustment. Not to say that I didn't go out and have fun whilst he was here, more along the lines that I was... well a little too tied up to properly update this excuse for a blog.

But here I am with some time on this ... bewildering Friday day in Melbourne. Sunny one moment, then a freak shower coming on down. Looking out this excuse of a window & blinds, I can see this sudden downpour of moisture falling from the skies. Ok, it's laying off for the moment. And as welcome a relief from the over-abundance of pollen in the air that sudden spit has caused, I can't help but wonder if the humidity tonight will be one of near-Malaysia proportions.

Nothing like a sudden rise in humidity to cast one's mind back to the epic proportions of heat & humidity which one experienced only oh-so-short a time ago. Nothing like going back to one's genetic background to gain new appreciation of Melbourne's weather despite its complete unpredictability. Taking a quick gaze at the weather application of Facebook, I can only see a vague reference towards cloudy nature, not precipitation. In actual fact, the so-called "up to date" forecast for today is saying it's only a balmy 24 degrees Celsius and meant to only have "a haze"... Some haze!

But enough of my weather bitching. Let's talk music.

Specifically, I'd like to refer to the music I've been hearing in television series that I particularly enjoy. Recently I noticed that some of the music being played in the latest episodes of Life (cop drama) was rather catchy and, dare I say it? I do dare... Modern! Thus, I wondered what was playing and looked up some of the lyrics. Thus I encountered the artists known as Gram Rabbit. Not be mistaken as a gram of a Rabbi. ... Which isn't a band so much as it is a rather creepy concept. Nonetheless their music was quite enjoyable, as was the one of the criminals one of their songs introduced. Quite aptly played.

Thoroughly enjoying what I found on Youtube, I decided to take a meander on down to the local music store and discover whether they truly could hold to that ideal that they have every sort of artist within their considerable music collection. And it's quite a large selection in hindsight. Though admittedly it's not exactly the "local" store, I did have to head on down to Camberwell to make such inquiries. Imagine to my surprise that Gram Rabbit indeed was not on the radar of this renowned store with black on yellow logo.

But once again, I digress. I was curious to ponder how the music editors of television shows comes across songs and how they chose to implant them into their show. If memory of DVD extras serve me correctly, some are created on the spot, or recycled continually through the entire lifespan of the series (IE: Stargate). But Life at this point in time has displayed a plethora of up-to-date modern references. NCIS consists of little ditties created by a small number of composers which for some reason favours the xylophone and the glockenspiel as the base riff for such tunes. Mathematically speaking, there shall be a day when there is no more music, that we have exhausted all the possibilities which the combination of notes can create. But by that same reckoning, there's also those who believe that we cannot come up with any new maths.

Mathematics and Music have been called the two sides of the same coin. I really wish I could recall who precisely said that, but memory and brain cells have escaped me time and time again. Usually through imbibing excess amounts of alcohol, but more often through getting my head whacked by various hands and surfaces.

Anyway, I seriously don't expect most people to actually make their way through so many words. I suppose it's only an exercise in showing off my typing skills and a small gander towards my vocabulary & imagination. Or better yet, just getting back into the feel of typing away at the keyboard for purposes other than work. So I bid you all adieu and well wishes for a fun (and safe if that's what works for you) Friday evening. I'm off to prep for mine. ^_~

Toodles!

P.S. To those new folks who are unused to my rambling ways, welcome! ^_^ Hope you enjoy you stay.

Anything that requires a helmet, should be on a motorbike! Oct. 24th, 2007 @ 06:29 pm
And when you take a look at rugby, you can see these big burly men doing some serious damage to each other. Without helmets. I laugh at American Football. Laugh! Chortle! Giggle inanely. ... Probably the latter the most because I'm rather good at that.

Moving right along then... Friday night was a resounding success as far as birthday parties go. I got drunk, and presents which I never expect ( Sheltered childhood )! And to boot, I ran into a wall! Or to be more precise, danced into a wall! No lasting damage, and since Dad arrived today with my new specs & sunnies I do believe that's a resounding success all round! ^_^

Mind you, these specs are taking awhile to get used to. As it is, for some reason the sunglasses are far more easier to get used to than the regular specs. I theorize it has something to do with the light input that the sunglasses' tinting is cutting down. Given that as prescription sunnies, they're exactly the same strength, I find it mildly bewildering.

So if anybody's got a camera handy and is willing to take snapshots of these new glasses whilst I'm stumbling over things all over again, please feel free to do so. I think I'll have to remove them when I'm cooking though. No reason for me to slice up my fingers.

I got this from Jacinta. How it works: Just comment on this post saying you'd like to play. In other news, apologies for the sporadic posts turning nearly non-existant. Either there's nothing to post up so I'll have to search my memory banks for topics I already haven't discussed or am willing to rehash in bright new, shiny colours ( Much like many artists in the music industry ) or make up some b.s. topic to rant about for fifteen minutes ( Such as the Movie industry does these days ) and then maybe, just maybe I'll have something I can be half-happy with throwing to the public on the Internet.

That and I've also being partying rather hard over the past few days. Friday was a culmination of multiple events occurring on the same day. Once again, Facebook to the rescue! 25 beers in 25 bars... well I piked out of that pretty early. Sculling your drink in 15 minutes does not bode well for a fun evening. Jay's send-off was pretty damn fine. Not to mention finally being able to put the people glimpsed on Facebook links to actual persons of flesh & blood. ... And fun. ^_^

Last but certainly not least was Alex's little shindig. Given how tipsy I was by that point and despite the lovely Thai food Jesse & Lyn introduced me to, I was still pleasantly surprised to be let in with nary a complaint or hint of door charge. And danced the night away. Hopefully that blonde girl who lost her friends finally found them afterwards. Yes, I'm aware that a true gentleman should have left the dance floor to accompany her against the various brutes out there but let's not forget that I'm no perfect gentleman. ^_~

Oh and I believe that this holds true for more than just programming. Playing pool, dancing in nightclubs and hitting on men/women are some of the other activities one can reach near-superhuman levels of skill and mastery with the correct blood alcohol levels. ... Unfortunately I always go one drink too far and well ... enough said. Saturday's celebrations of Zack was interesting enough even before the tequila shots got involved. Was good to have Khoa there for a little while doing a run-through of various techniques, body postures. Between my lack of shame & blunt honesty and his head full of knowledge without putting into practise, we make a good team.

Definitely some interesting art upstairs this time around at Fad Bar. The girls multiplied by the hour to my pleasant surprise, and probably to Zack's too. Last I saw of him was just after we left Eurotrash and given by his general activity on Facebook, I'd assume he's still breathing.

What else... Oh, really need to get my hair hacked off before this Thursday. Don't need long hair in front of my father. No, it's not that he's some sort of intolerant bastard. Quite the opposite as a matter of fact. It's just that there's also red in there. Don't need to add fuel to the fire. Unfortunately he's arriving quite soon after Sis & I get back in Melbourne. So we're going to have to A.) Clean up this place and B.) keep my hair as its natural colour.

That's all for now folks.

Take what you can and leave the weak behind... Sep. 25th, 2007 @ 01:14 pm
So yeah, haven't posted in a long while now.

Couple weekends ago, it was all just one long weekend of pain, screaming my lungs out and trying to organize Anime fans.
...
Fortunately for yours truly, this is only an annual event of pain and suffering wrapped in the occasional fits of fun known as "Melbourne Anime Festival" aka Manifest. So why would one like me volunteer to behave as the Auctioneer this year? Simply put, the last couple of years the Manifest Auction have been... less than stellar in their way of entertainment purposes. So I thought that I would be able to provide some forms of light entertainment which hopefully be clean. ... Ok, the clean part lasted as long as I kept my mouth shut. But after my opening remarks which were generally well-received by the audience I thought things worked out quite well. Well before we started selling the Yaoi merchandise half an hour into the Auction.

Was a rather large sort of pillow case ('bout 5 - 6 feet long) with a particular Anime character in lingerie decorating it. Pretty entertaining bidding going on for it. Wasn't the record high bid for the Auction in question. However the guy who won the pillow case also got the highest bid for another item. Hefty chunk of cash overall was spent at the Auction. Whew.

I was mildly irritated by the rush we had to do near to the end. Granted we were half an hour overtime, but that's mild compared to some of the Auctions I've seen previously. And we did 30 more items than we originally planned for.

Manifest after-party was pretty enjoyable for me. Granted that's because I headed on out with Avi et al for the Oztaku after-Manifest dinner. Which when surrounded by people who can understand my eating habits, is quite the enjoyable experience. Mind you, wasn't exactly sober by the time I made my way across to the Portland Hotel. After a few hassles when the whole group ( And it was a pretty damn big group ) tried to figure out where to head to next, we eventually settled down with drinks in hand, music above our heads and familiar company all around.

I was entertained thoroughly by Amber's general outfit which kept on getting loose on account of her inability to tie tough knots with the shoelaces holding her outfit together. Clearly a girl who needs more friends around her who are experienced with corsets or other Goth outfits which involve tying together. Also very much amused by Alan's general shock and surprise at my love of punk music. Granted I was there in coat, vest & tie (Auctioneer outfit) whilst he was there in full punk regalia. But until we got kicked out at 5 am, every time he passed me he would exclaim in a rather loud voice "I can't believe you like Punk Music!" Thank you Social Distortion for give me some cred amongst these youngsters.

Speaking of youngsters, one individual managed to drink far too much for his own good. Along with a Japanese girl who also managed to imbibe more alcohol than necessary which got her legless. So after helping her back to her hotel with her co-workers, I helped shoulder the burden of the Manifestee who definitely wasn't in a sober state.

Oh and in other news? I really gotta try this sometime soon! ... Except I don't have any neighbours who have loud sex. And I'm also seriously missing a elliptical reflector dish. But seriously, I would REALLY love to try that scenario out.

There's something comforting about being able to sit down at a bar with a friend on a Tuesday night over a couple beers and some Wasabi peas. Just chatting away about nothing, to relationships, to politics and even religion. I miss doing that with my close buddies back in Uni. Why don't we do that any more? Does the life that we all lead involve a complete lack of discussion unless it's over a dinner table? I will be the first to admit that I miss it.
